Weddings are so rich in superstitions that I decided to create an article to discuss them to learn about the most common and ancient superstitions related to this beautiful event, where they come from, and if there is a special dress code to bring good luck!

My best friend got married two months ago and she was obsessed with bad omens and bad luck, so she wanted me to do a little bit of research to avoid bad energies around her special day. For example, is it a bad omen to wear black to a wedding?

Let’s learn this and more with this article!

KEY TAKEAWAYS

In the past, wearing black to a wedding was considered a bad omen in many Western cultures, symbolizing mourning or bad luck.

However, modern perspectives have changed significantly.

Black is now widely accepted as a suitable wedding attire color, especially for formal or evening weddings.

It is chosen for its elegance and versatility. Some couples even specify formal or black attire for their guests.

Ultimately, whether wearing black to a wedding is seen as a bad omen depends on cultural and personal preferences, but it’s essential to respect the couple’s wishes and adhere to any specified dress code.

Is it a bad omen to wear black to a wedding?

Yes! Wearing black or purple to a wedding is not the most welcoming dress code as these colors are linked to death and darkness. Being that weddings are usually celebrated in a church, we have to consider something. Usually, we wear black to funerals and, during Easter time, the priest usually wears purple as a sign of mourning for the passion of Christ.

Other curiosities about the wedding and bad omens

  • You must not wear the wedding ring before the wedding ceremony, it would bring bad luck!
  • The bride must not look in the mirror while wearing the dress before the wedding, the only exception to this superstition is if she takes off a shoe, an earring, or a glove.
  • The bride and groom must not see each other before meeting at the ceremony. Obviously, it is forbidden for the groom to see the dress before the wedding.
  • Emotions and tremors must be controlled! Do not drop the wedding rings in church, but if it should happen, they can only be collected by those who celebrate the rite.
  • The groom who has already left home to go to the place of the celebration cannot go back. If he forgets something, he must rely on a friend or witness.
  • The bridegroom, having reached the threshold of the marital home, must pick up the bride and thus cross the door. This tradition has origins in ancient Rome, where it was believed that it was more appropriate for the husband to take his wife in his arms to prevent her from stumbling upon entering the new house.

The best day to get married

  • Monday is an auspicious day because it is the day of the moon
  • Tuesday brings wealth
  • Wednesday is a good day
  • Thursday brings sorrow
  • Friday brings misfortune
  • Saturday is the unluckiest day ever

However, we must not forget that a popular saying reminds us: “neither Venus nor Mars, not married don’t begin, nor are given in principle to art”.

The best month to get married

  • January: affection and fidelity
  • February: month of mating
  • March: crazy! Better to avoid
  • April: joyful
  • May: NO! Unlucky month
  • June: perfect!
  • July: announces fatigue for the couple
  • August: ensures a life full of great changes
  • September: wealth and joy
  • October: lots of love but little money
  • November: promises a lot of happiness
  • December: eternal love

When should you celebrate the wedding?

The bride and groom must get married before sunset; it is absolutely forbidden to do it after, it is bad luck!

The rules on the bride’s outfit

  • a new thing: it symbolizes the path that is being undertaken
  • an old thing: it represents the past you are leaving behind
  • something borrowed: it expresses the affection of close people
  • one thing given as a gift: the love of loved ones
  • a blue thing: a symbol of sincerity and purity

The garter

In the past, it was customary to take a piece of the bride’s dress to bring good luck.

Over the years, this custom has shifted to the garter, to prevent the bride’s dress from being ruined. What once represented the piece of the dress is now the garter, which is worn by the bride, and during the celebrations, the groom has the task of taking it off and then throwing it among the men invited to the wedding.

Whoever manages to win it will be lucky for the whole year to come.

Rice

It must be thrown on the bride and groom as they leave the place of the ceremony as a wish for abundance and fertility.

The horn

The wedding procession after the ceremony dictates the car horns of those accompanying the bride and groom to ring madly. Given that etiquette forbids it, it is said that this custom serves to ward off evil spirits.

The bouquet

The bouquet must be the last gift from the groom to the future bride. Tradition has it that the groom buys it and has it delivered to the bride’s home on the morning of the wedding. In reality, it is always the bride who chooses the bouquet, because it is in harmony with her dress and floral decorations.

At the end of the ceremony, the bride throws the bouquet at a group of single girls who are competing to grab it. Whoever takes the bouquet will be the next lucky one to get married.

Guests

Colors banned for the guests’ outfit are black and white unless explicitly requested by the couple. White because it must be for the exclusive use of the bride and there is a lack of decency if you choose to wear it, as the attention should be on the bride only!

What do you think about these signs for good and bad luck? Are there any popular beliefs related to bad omens during wedding days in your culture? Let me know!

Besides that, remember that bad omen or not, you should keep your energy high and positive to make amazing things happen to you as that’s how the law of attraction works! Bring some fresh positive energy to a wedding and it will be a wonderful way to live a happy, serene, and absolutely amazing day for you and the people close to you!
